France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom are unlikely to merge mobile operations as they did in the UK in other markets, Orange’s head of European operations was quoted saying.
In an interview with Reuters, Olaf Swantee said that France Telecom was open to sign more network-sharing agreements, but added that the Everything Everywhere joint venture model was unlikely.
At the end of May, the French incumbent confirmed its intention to sell minority stakes of assets in which it did not exercise an operational role.
France Telecom holds 35% of Orange Austria and 20% of Portugal’s Sonaecom, which owns mobile operator Optimus. Private equity firm Mid Europa Partners owns 65% of Orange Austria, while Portuguese multi-sector retailer Sonae SGPS owns 53.17% in Sonaecom.
Swantee reportedly said that at the moment no decision had been taken to exit or consolidate Orange’s position in any of its European countries.
