The EU has invested E10m in pan-European open standards venture Webinos, which aims to unify mobile internet applications by September 2013.
A consortium including Deutsche Telekom and Telecom Italia plans to develop the open source platform to facilitate the development of online applications and services across a wide spectrum of internet-connected devices.
Stephan Steglich, of Berlin-based research institute Fraunhofer FOKUS, which is leading the consortium, said: “The vision of the project is to create a universal application platform. That means we aim to enable the use of web applications consistently and securely across all internet-enabled screens – including mobile, PC, TV and in-car entertainment units.”
