UAE incumbent Etisalat has signed an agreement with the Afghan telecom regulator to provide telecommunications in rural areas of Afghanistan, said UAE state news agency WAM.
Etisalat Afghanistan will receive a US$3.4m (E2.5m) subsidy from the Afghan Telecommunication Development Fund. The TDF is fed by a tax levied on telecoms operators and was established to bring communications to far-flung areas of the country.
The project will see Etisalat build and operate 23 base transceiver stations in 17 districts of nine provinces.
Etisalat has nearly 4 million subscribers in its Afghan network covering 29 provinces in Afghanistan.
The company competes with MTN, Afghan Telecom and Roshan.
