UAE-based telco Etisalat will not to re-enter the Indian market after confirming it would not take part in the upcoming 2G auction.
Earlier this year, the company decided to shut down its mobile operations in the country, known as Etisalat DB, after the Supreme Court ordered the cancellation of its 2G licences, arguing they had been illegally granted in 2008.
A total of eight operators have been affected by this decision. It is not yet known whether other companies will follow suit and decide against re-acquiring 2G licences.
Originally scheduled for August, the 2G auction is not expected to start before mid-November. The Supreme Court gave the government until mid-January to complete the award of the licences.
