UK mobile operators Everything Everywhere, Telefonica and Vodafone have announced plans to launch an m-commerce JV before the end of the year.
The JV, which is subject to competition clearance, will create mobile marketing and payment services.
In a joint statement announcing the plans this morning, the three operators outlined intentions to provide undisclosed start-up investments for the new venture.
A spokesman for Telefonica later told TelecomFinance: “We will not be revealing the financials of the JV. The intention is to build a company which will drive the development of ecommerce services on the mobile, but will then feed profits back into the respective shareholders of the JV.”
However, the three mobile backers will continue to develop their own competing m-commerce products and services, which will be based on the JV’s open platform infrastructure.
They are also open to welcoming other potential JV partners, such as the country’s other mobile operator, Hutchinson Whampoa’s 3, as the venture gets underway.
