The European Commission has extended by 10 working days the phase I investigation into the proposed takeover of German mobile operator E-Plus by Telefonica.
The move was expected after the German Federal Cartel Office yesterday asked Brussels to refer the investigation to German authorities.
The extension will give the regulator time to consider the request from Germany. Approval is at the discretion of the EC, which has in similar cases turned down referral requests in the past.
In 2012, the Commission refused to refer the investigation into the sale of Orange Austria to Hutchison to the Austrian antitrust regulator.
The new deadline for the EC’s ongoing phase I decision is 20 December.
