Douglas Li has announced plans to retire as CEO of Hong Kong mobile operator SmarTone after more than 14 years at the helm.
Li, who was also the founding CEO during 1992-1996 before stepping aside only to return to the role five years later, will be retiring at the end of August 2015.
“Having been CEO for over 14 years this second time round, it is time to hand over to the next generation of leadership to take the company and the industry forward in the fast evolving mobile-first internet,” he said.
The announcement comes not long after SmarTone paid HK$980.4m (US$126.4m) in December for two extra blocks of 4G spectrum.
The telco’s board said it will announce succession plans at a later date.
