The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is examining proposals by the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) to merge state-owned telcos Banat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL), and equipment maker Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), according to reports.
In early April, the BRPSE proposed a three-way merger in order to turn around struggling ITI. This came a few weeks after the DoT decided to revive plans to combine BSNL and MTNL.
A similar plan had been rejected three years earlier by former telecom minister A. Raja, who is currently under investigation as part of the country’s presumed 2G scam.
In late May this year, BSNL and MTNL reportedly confirmed that they were discussing ways to create synergies between their operations.
