The Dominican Republic is set to auction spectrum in the 900 MHz and 1.7 GHz/2.1 GHz later this month.
Telecoms regulator Indotel is auctioning the licences following a public consultation on which bands should be designated for mobile use.
Envelopes will be opened on 21 April and the licences will be awarded by an evaluation committee within five days after that date, in line with the procedure laid out in 2011. The spectrum will then be allocated within 30 days.
Operators will get the chance to acquire nationwide frequencies across the 941-960 MHz and 1,755MHz/2,110-2,155 bands.
The Dominican Republic’s mobile market is led by America Movil subsidiary Claro and Orange Dominicana, recently acquired by multinational telco Altice. Those two operators boast 51% and 35% of the market respectively, according to data from Pyramid Research.
Orange’s share will rise by 5% once Altice integrates customers of Tricom, which it also bought recently, into the operator.
Viva, held by Trilogy International Partners, holds the final 9%.
