The government of Argentina has announced that DirecTV will be launching broadband services across the country. DirecTV will initially offer broadband in the city of Mendoza and then roll out nationwide services by the end of 2011.
This announcement comes swift on the heels of last week’s decision to revoke the broadband licence of Fibertel, a company controlled by Grupo Clarin.
Grupo Clarin has long been a bugbear of the incumbent administration of President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner.
According to a statement from the company, DirecTV plans to invest US$46m into its Argentine operations. DirecTV is a Californian-based direct broadcast satellite service controlled by US media conglomerate Liberty Media.
The office of President Kirchner and DirecTV were unavailable to comment at the time of going to press.
