The UK government has selected Ofcom’s deputy chair Patricia Hodgson as its preferred candidate to succeed outgoing chair Colette Bowe and head up the telecoms regulator.
Bowe is set to leave the post on 31 March 2014 when she will have completed her five year term.
The culture, media and sport select committee will hold a hearing with Hodgson on 17 December to assess her suitability for the role.
The committee will then report back to Maria Miller – the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport – who will assess its findings and then decide whether or not to promote Hodgson to the role.
Ofcom was created in 2002 as a “super regulator”. It is the regulatory and competition authority for telecoms, as well as broadcasting and the postal industries.
