The EBRD has invested US$4m equity in Datacell, a wireless broadband service in Azerbaijan.
Datacell, which is already operating in the capital city of Baku, will now expand to the country’s other regions. It aims to provide high-speed internet services across the entire Absheron peninsula, which includes Baku and its suburbs, as well as in 12 other major towns by 2011.
The EBRD will appoint a director to Datacell’s board.
Set up in 2005, Datacell operates under the elcell brand name. In addition to broadband services, the company offers internet-based services for banking, retail, transport and other industries.
There is 14% internet penetration in Azerbaijan and up to 70% of subscribers use dial-up access. There are about 30 internet providers in Baku, but outside the capital city there is virtually no competition.
