UK enterprise-facing telco Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW) has appointed Gavin Darby, a former executive of local mobile operator Vodafone, as CEO.
Darby will take up his new role on 28 November to replace long-serving executive John Pluthero, who will step down from the board in December but remain with the company until March 2012.
Pluthero, who joined CWW’s board in 2005, vowed to push for a more radical approach to cloud and data services when he took the helm from previous CEO Jim Marsh in June this year to revive the company’s ailing fortunes.
However, the decline in government spending has continued to impact CWW, which reported underlying earnings of £190m for H1 2011, down from £214m in the corresponding period last year. It posted bottom-line losses of £443m, including write-downs on the value of acquisitions.
According to chairman John Barton, Darby will “provide the longevity of leadership, energy and fresh insight needed by Cable&Wireless Worldwide for the future”.
CWW also announced the launch of a cost reduction programme that will focus on support functions and the company’s supply chain.
