Cable & Wireless Communications will complete a network ring around the Caribbean with a proposed new fibre optic cable link between the east and west of the region.
A new submarine cable will link Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the west to the British Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic in the east, more than doubling CWC’s carrier capacity in the region and expected to strengthen its capability in serving its carrier customers in North and Latin America as well. CWC’s Jamaican business, LIME, has already set to work on installing the cable and is expected to have it operational by early 2011.
This development comes not long after CWC, which was demerged in March to focus on consumer telecoms and non-UK interests, inked a US$70m deal with Venezuelan-Cuban operator Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe to link Jamaica and Cuba with cable.
Following the new East-West cable and two other submarine cables built in the region in recent years, between Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands and between Bermuda and the east coast of the US, the company’s regional cable network will complete a Caribbean ‘network ring’, improving resilience and access for carriers.
There is a quote as well but it doesn’t seem to add anything:
