Cable & Wireless has moved to calm reports which claim the operator is close to finalising a deal in Cuba.
The telco told local press that it is not as close to finalising a deal as The Sunday Times had reported, but that it does remain interested in the Cuban market. The operator has said that it remains in the running for a deal for an undersea cable which would link Cuba with Jamaica, but that this deal is still some way away from being finalised, and added that it is not actively seeking to snap up a stake in the state controlled telco Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba (Etecsa), as has also been reported. Telecom Italia holds a 27% minority stake in Etecsa, which it has been reported to be putting on the block.
