US cableco Cox Communications has said it will stop building its own 3G network, opting instead to offer the service via its existing wholesale relationship with Sprint Nextel.
It said in a statement that this would allow it to “accomplish speed to market while achieving greater operational efficiencies”.
Cox never launched services on the 3G network it was developing, instead using those of its MVNO partner Sprint.
It said: “We believe this approach is good for our customers, allowing us to take the necessary steps to fulfil our promise to deliver a Cox experience that customers expect from us.”
It added that it was aiming to make its wireless service, Cox Wireless, available to 50% of its footprint this year.
According to a Bloomberg report, Cox has used Sprint’s network to provide 3G services in California, Oklahoma, Virginia and Nebraska.
Cox describes itself as the third largest cableco, providing services to 6 million families and businesses.
