Greg Young has been appointed as CEO of Omani mobile player Nawras, controlled by Qatar’s Ooredoo, with immediate effect.
He replaces Ross Cormack, who has become the head of Ooredoo’s new mobile operations in Myanmar.
Young was previously the CEO of publically-listed Sri Lanka Telecom and overall has 29 years of experience in the wireless and telecoms industry, according to a statement.
Cormack, who had led Nawras since 2004, was “instrumental in the original bid for a telecoms licence in Oman”, Ooredoo said. In Myanmar, he will be tasked with developing a greenfield project.
Ooredoo was one of the two operators, alongside Norway’s Telenor, to secure hotly-contested nationwide licences in the once isolationist country.
The company’s chief strategy officer Jeremy Sell was recently quoted saying that Ooredoo is looking to build the networks in partnership with Telenor.
He reportedly added that both operators do not want “to put a huge amount of money in straight away” as they need to be “a bit cautious and see how it goes”. He pointed to the difficulty of building the networks given the scarcity of telecoms infrastructure in the country at the moment.
Myanmar’s long anticipated telecoms law was finally enacted earlier this month, a move expected to reassure investors.
