Mobile operator CooTel is set launch services in Cambodia’s crowded mobile market, according to a Cambodia Daily report.
Controlled by Chinese company Xinwei Telecom, CooTel will become the country’s seventh mobile carrier when it starts operating next month.
Xinwei Telecom is itself owned by Chinese businessman Wang Jing, who recently signed a deal to build a canal through Nicaragua.
Lay Marivo, deputy director of the Cambodian regulator, was quoted as saying that CooTel has submitted information about its plan to start offering services in August.
According to its website, CooTel uses McWiLL (multi-carrier wireless information local loop), a “commercially mature 4G telecom technology”.
Advantages, it says, include “high capacity, large coverage, flexible networking, supporting mobility, handoff, roaming, and integration of both narrowband services (e.g., voice and SMS) and broadband data (e.g., video, internet access).”
The saturated Cambodian mobile market recently saw consolidation with the merger of Hello Axiata and Smart Mobile. Meanwhile, VimpelCom exited the country by selling its entire 90% stake in mobile operator Beeline to local partner and businessman Huot Vanthan.
