Dominican Republic’s two largest mobile operators, Claro and Orange, have received nationwide frequencies in the 900 MHz and 1.7 GHz/2.1 GHz bands for a combined price tag of US$70.5m.
Indotel, the country’s telecoms regulator, said Altice’s Orange spent US$28.5m for 19 MHz of spectrum in the 900 MHz band.
Leading player Claro, which is owned by America Movil, bid for four blocks in the 1.7 GHz/2.1 GHz range but only secured two of those for US$42m.
In April, Indotel started auctioning the airwaves following a public consultation on which bands should be designated for mobile use.
Viva, the third-largest operator, did not take part in the auction.
Claro and Orange, which is being merged with local triple-play operator Tricom, boast 51% and 40% of the market respectively, according to data from Pyramid Research.
Viva, held by Trilogy International Partners, holds the final 9%.
