Romanian WiMAX operator 2K Telecom has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding with the Export-Important Bank of China (China Exim Bank) and Chinese telecoms equipment manufacturer Huawei.
Romanian business news agency Actmedia reported the agreement was signed by Mihai Alexandru Voicu, the local coordinator for a cooperation programme between China-Central and Eastern Europe, at a recent meeting in Beijing.
2K Telekom is one of five operators taking part in Romania’s spectrum auction, currently underway.
A company spokesperson today declined to comment on the reported MoU, saying the rules of the bidding process prevent it from doing so. However, he did confirm that Huawei and ZTE are long-term equipment suppliers to the company and have helped it deploy its existing 4G WiMax network.
Bidding for short and long-term licences in the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands began on 10 September and ended today (17 September). Regulator Ancom said today’s bidding round determined the generic blocks won by each bidder and the amounts they will pay. The other bidders are OTE and Romtelecom-owned Cosmote Romanian Telecommunications, France Telecom-owned Orange Romania, RCS & RDS and Vodafone Romania.
Regulator Ancom said seven assignment rounds will take place from 21 to 24 September to determine how exactly the frequencies will be distributed and bidders will be required to make additional payments.
Founded by local businessman Sebastian Ghita in 2000, 2K Telekom claims to operate a nationwide network with coverage in most towns and cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants.
