China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has reportedly asked telco giants China Telecom and China Unicom to provide more details about their plans to address alleged monopolistic practices.
In early December, both companies released separate statements promising to make some improvements to their operations following an anti-monopoly probe by the NDRC.
Li Quing, of the NDRC, had been quoted previously saying that China Telecom and China Unicom together control 90% of the country’s broadband market.
Li reportedly added that the two companies may have been using their dominant position to charge competitors higher interconnection fees, while failing to improve network connections.
Now, the NDRC is asking China Telecom and China Unicom to be more specific about timetables and pricing policies, according to reports citing local newspaper the Economic Observer.
In a statement to TelecomFinance, a spokesperson for China Telecom said that the company “is now actively implementing the relevant enhancement initiatives while maintaining proactive communications with the relevant regulatory authorities.”
