China Mobile is expected to start testing 4G technology soon, after receiving the nod from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The trials will reportedly take place in six cities – Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen – over the next few months.
Called TD-LTE, China’s domestically-developed 4G system is aimed at allowing faster data transmission compared with China Mobile’s 3G technology. Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks are reportedly among the vendors selected for the tests.
The MIIT will be responsible for planning and organising the process, while China Mobile will construct, operate and maintain the networks. The operator will also be in charge of testing technology products, according to reports.
Several countries have already launched LTE trial networks in recent months and many more are expected to follow suit in 2011.
China Mobile could not be reached for comment before going to press.
