The Chilean government has put forward plans to create a new telecoms regulator, the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones, to oversee the domestic industry.
According to a government statement, the new regulator would be responsible for monitoring that companies comply to telecoms regulations and, if any company should fail to comply, organising sanctions.
It will also participate in granting licences to new operators in the Chilean market and in overseeing the correct use of radio spectrum, following telecoms regulations.
The new regulator will take over part of the duties currently held by a government department, the Subsecretaria de Telecomunicaciones (SUBTEL).
In its statement, published on SUBTEL’s website, the government emphasised the new regulator’s role to defend the rights of internet, television and telephone users.
The proposed law that would create the regulator also allows for a significant increase in fines for companies that do not respect the rights of consumers.
Local publication La Segunda Online reported that the government will now put forward the new proposed law to the country’s Congress.
