The Chilean government is reportedly planning to auction spectrum in the first quarter of next year, as part of a process to develop 4G wireless networks in the country.
Local newspaper Diario Financiero reported that Jorge Atton, head of the government’s telecommunications department (SUBTEL), had said that the plan for the 4G network process would be presented in two weeks.
The newspaper also reported that the government is aiming to reduce barriers to new entrants into the local telecoms market.
The major mobile operators in Chile are America Movil’s Claro, Telefonica’s Movistar, Nextel Chile (a subsidiary of US-based NII Holdings) and the Chilean incumbent Entel.
