French media and telecoms group Vivendi has appointed Jean-Yves Charlier, previously a supervisory board member and chairman of its strategic committee, to head its telecoms activities internationally.
Currently CEO of interactive learning company Promethean, Charlier will also participate in the strategic review of the Vivendi group, which includes telecoms businesses SFR in France, GVT in Brazil and Maroc Telecom in Morocco. Previously, Charlier has worked as the CEO of Colt Telecom and head of BT’s European operations.
Vivendi has remained tight-lipped about its overall strategy following a key weekend meeting of top executives in Paris in late June. But there has been widespread speculation that it could result in disposal and/or spin-off of certain assets, including SFR.
The French conglomerate also reportedly recently hired Rothschild and Deutsche Bank to look at strategic options for GVT.
Besides Charlier’s appointment, Bertrand Meheut, head of pay-TV division Canal +, will lead a “strategic study” of Vivendi’s media and content operations. These include Universal Music and games business Activision Blizzard.
Meanwhile, Jean-Francois Dubos, chairman of the management board, and CFO Philippe Capron have been confirmed in their respective positions. Stephane Roussel will also remain as chairman and CEO of SFR.
Dubos stepped in as chairman when predecessor Jean-Bernard Levy left in late June following disagreements with other key executives over the group’s strategic developments.
