Israel’s largest mobile operator, Cellcom, has named Ami Erel as its new chairman with immediate effect, succeeding Raanan Cohen.
Cellcom said in a statement today that Erel was picked by Discount Investment Corporation (DIC), its largest shareholder with a 78.5% stake.
“Erel’s appointment is in accordance with the requirement of the company’s telecommunications licence and articles of association that at least 20% of the company directors be appointed by Israeli citizens and residents from among the company’s founding shareholders…namely DIC,” the operator commented.
Cellcom also said that three of its directors – Rafi Bisker, Haim Gavrieli, and Edith Lusky – have resigned from the company’s board in order to comply with board composition requirements set by a recent law to promote competition and mitigate concentration in the sector.
The company is the largest of Israel’s five mobile operators. It recently signed a 4G network sharing agreement with number four player Golan Telecom.
The 4G auction itself is scheduled to take place later this year and will be open to existing and new operators.
