Thailand incumbent CAT Telecom could scrap its intended acquisition of Hutchinson Telecommunications International (HTI)’s CDMA assets to focus on its own network.
According to reports, plans to acquire the assets have been hit by delays after Thailand’s Information and Communications Technology Ministry (ICT) ordered CAT to pay Bt4bn (US$130m) for them, instead of Bt7.2bn (US$235m).
Unconfirmed reports suggest the delay has prompted CAT to rethink its business strategy, focusing instead on its existing network and expanding national roaming agreements in areas where it currently has no coverage.
According to the reports, ICT minister Juti Kririksh has given Hutch and CAT one month to lower the acquisition price before seeking cabinet approval.
Both companies were unavailable to comment before press time.
