Cameroon’s fixed-line incumbent Camtel has reportedly been awarded a licence to provide mobile services in the country.
With this permit, Camtel now becomes Cameroon’s fourth wireless player behind MTN, Orange and Viettel’s Nextell, according to multiple local media reports.
The company and the country’s telecoms regulator could not be reached for comment.
Separately, it has been reported that both MTN and Orange will now be able to provide 3G services.
So far, only Nextell was allowed to offer such services. Vietnam’s Viettel became Cameroon’s third mobile operator in late 2012 following a government-run tender for a 2G/3G licence.
Research firm BuddeComm estimates that mobile penetration in the country, which has a population of over 22 million, will reach 73% by the end of 2014.
