Burundi’s government plans to privatise telecoms incumbent Onatel this year, according to Telegeography.
The authorities have appointed the Projet de Development des Secteurs Financier et Prive (PDSFP) to deal with the privatisation. The PDSFP is a project set up by the government and backed by the World Bank and the IMF to implement reforms for public spending.
The presidential decree authorising the privatisation of the telecoms operator was adopted in January 2009 but the process has never been launched.
Onatel offers fixed-line and internet services, and its subsidiary ONAMOB offers mobile services. ONAMOB competes with largest mobile operator Leo, Africell and Econet Wireless Burundi.
Neither the authorities, nor the operator was immediately available for comments.
