Private equity-backed BR Towers has completed the acquisition of the rights to 2,113 towers from Brazilian wireless operator Oi.
The GP Investimentos-owned towerco spent R$502m (US$211m) on the assets, which double its total portfolio. It has the rights to use and operate the infrastructure for 20 years.
The transaction went through following approval from local telecoms regulator Anatel in August. BR Towers previously obtained CADE approval in May.
The towerco will lease space back to Oi but also increase the capacity of the towers so that they can be shared with other mobile operators.
BR Towers said in a statement that the towers were mainly in the northeast and south of the country.
The company came into being last September following the R$503m purchase of 2,000 towers from an unnamed operator, believed to be Telefonica’s Brazilian subsidiary Vivo.
