Struggling smartphone maker BlackBerry has hired James Mackey as executive vice president for corporate development and strategic planning.
His appointment follows the resignation of Chris Wormald, BlackBerry’s VP of strategic alliances, earlier this week.
Mackey had previously been at software companies Open Text Corp and SAP in the corporate development departments. He developed and led SAP’s global merger and acquisitions group and helped complete more than 40 acquisitions, according to a BlackBerry statement.
BlackBerry’s executive chair and CEO John Chen said he had worked extensively with Mackey in the past and that their trusting relationship would help implement the changes needed to reshape the company.
The Canadian loss-making company is set announce its Q3 results tomorrow. Its share price is currently hovering at around the US$6 mark – down more than 95% from its 2008 peak of US$144.56.
