BlackBerry’s CEO John Chen has recruited former colleague Marty Beard to become the Canadian smartphone maker’s COO.
Beard was most recently chairman and CEO of cloud computing company LiveOps. Prior to that he worked at software group Sybase, where Chen was CEO before joining BlackBerry last autumn.
In his new role Beard will be responsible for marketing, the development of the BlackBerry 10 application, customer care, and for instituting best practices and processes.
Beard fills the void left by Kristian Tear who parted ways with the company last November. BlackBerry’s CEO, CFO and CMO all left that same month.
Commenting on the appointment, Chen said: “BlackBerry continues to attract top talent to the company. Marty brings extensive experience in operations, marketing and serving customers through the best technologies and processes available.”
Since Chen’s appointment last November, BlackBerry’s share price has rallied, rising more than 53%. The company has shifted its strategy and re-focused on its core enterprise clients.
