India’s latest mobile operator Reliance Jio has picked Sunil Dutt, the former MD of BlackBerry India, to become its president.
Reliance Industries, the parent of Reliance Jio, could not be reached to confirm local reports. But Dutt confirmed his appointment to the Press Trust of India.
Before serving at BlackBerry, Dutt reportedly worked for Samsung India, HP and Nokia.
Jio, which is owned by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani via Reliance Industries, is aiming to launch 4G and TV services by the end of 2014.
Over the past year, the operator has agreed numerous tower and network sharing agreements with local telcos, including a few with Reliance Communications (RCom), controlled by once-estranged brother Anil Ambani.
Jio also bid aggressively in the 2014 hotly-contested spectrum auction, agreeing to pay US$1.7bn to secure 1,800 MHz frequencies.
