The GSMA trade body of mobile operators has announced the resignation of chairman, and former Telecom Italia head, Franco Bernabe.
Jon Fredrik Baksaas, CEO of Norway’s Telenor Group, will serve as acting chairman until the organisation’s board elects a permanent replacement, GSMA said in a statement. The organisation expects to name the new chairperson in November.
GSMA director general Anne Bouverot said: “Franco has been a passionate advocate for a forward-thinking and collaborative approach in addressing the challenges facing our industry …”
Bernabe, who resigned as chairman and CEO of the indebted Italian incumbent a fortnight ago after six years at the helm, was elected chair of GSMA in December 2010 and re-elected in December last year.
GSMA claims to represent nearly 800 mobile operators worldwide, uniting them with companies in the broader sector, such as handset and device makers, software companies and ISPs.
