The board of Belgian incumbent Belgacom has named CFO Ray Stewart as interim CEO at the weekend, following the government’s decision to dismiss Didier Bellens.
On Friday the Belgian government, which has a 53% stake in the operator, justified its decision to fire the CEO saying Bellens had repeatedly criticised its major shareholder over the last few weeks.
Some of the CEO responsibilities will also be delegated to Stefaan De Clerck, the recently-appointed chairman, until a new chief is found.
Michel Moll, the former chairman, left the operator in September after reportedly acknowledging to have been a strategic consultant for Chinese telecoms vendor Huawei since 2010.
Belgacom said in a statement that “an external headhunting agency, selected on the basis of tender, will be asked to draw up a shortlist of qualified candidates”. The most suitable candidates for the position of CEO will then be presented to the government, which will make the final appointment decision, it said.
