Bahrain-based Batelco has named Muna Al Hashemi as the acting CEO for its local unit.
Al Hashemi takes over from group CEO Alan Whelan, who has also managed the subsidiary since its former chief, Rashid Abdulla, stepped down in late August.
Al Hashemi, who is the first woman to hold a CEO role in Bahrain’s telecoms industry according to Batelco, has headed up the company’s consumer division since 2008.
She first joined the operator in 1994 and has since worked within its engineering, customer service, accounts, product marketing and development and customer marketing divisions.
She is also a board director at Batelco’s Jordan unit Uminah. Recent reports suggested that the Bahraini company is considering selling Uminah, which could fetch about US$600m.
When announcing Abdulla’s departure, Batelco chairman Hamad Bin Abdulla Al Khalifa acknowledged that the search for a new Bahrain CEO may take “some time”.
In addition to Bahrain and Jordan, Batelco is present in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt and a few islands across the globe.
The telco also had operations in India until the 2G licences of its joint venture in the country were cancelled in early 2012 in the wake of the 2G scam.
