Batelco (BSE:BATELCO) has appointed Muna Al Hashemi as CEO of its Bahrain unit, promoting her from the acting CEO role she was given in December 2014.
Al Hashemi becomes the first female CEO of a telco in the Gulf region. She will report to group CEO Ihab Hinnawi, who took over from Alan Whelan in February. Hinnawi was previously CEO of Jordanian subsidiary Umniah.
Al Hashemi has been heading up the consumer division since 2008, having joined the company in 1994. With an MA in telecommunications and a BSc in electronic engineering, she has worked across divisions including engineering, customer services, accounts and marketing.
Batelco also posted H1 2015 profits of BD27.5m (US$72.9m), an 11% increase year-on-year. Over the same period, mobile customer numbers increased by 2%, while broadband customer numbers rose by 16%.
