Bangladesh reportedly plans to sell spectrum in the 4G-suitable 1,800 MHz and 2,100 MHz bands by March next year.
Bangladesh has 10.6 MHz of unused or unsold airwaves in the 1,800 MHz band and 15 MHz in the 2,100 band, local newspaper the Daily Star cited an official of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) as saying.
BTRC and local mobile operators discussed the topic at a recent meeting and the regulator plans to send guidelines on the sale process, including on prices, to the telecoms ministry next week, the report stated.
The government raised US$525m from its 3G spectrum last year, with four local operators – Grameenphone, Robi Axiata, Airtel Bangladesh and Banglalink – winning frequencies.
State-owned Teletalk also acquired spectrum in the auction but, according to the report, is yet to pay.
Smallest player Citycell failed to secure frequencies after reportedly telling the regulator it could not afford the US$20m deposit because of financial issues.
According to the report, BTRC had planned to make spectrum in the 700 MHz band available for 4G but later decided the market was not yet prepared for it.
BTRC was not immediately available for comment.
