The Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel announced yesterday that six operators have bid for the highly-coveted Band H spectrum.
In a statement, Anatel said that Claro, CTBC Telecom, Nextel, Oi, TIM, and Vivo had placed bids.
The spectrum on offer includes the sub-band H (10MHz + 10MHz), sub-band extension H(SE) (5MHz + 5MHz), sub-bands A(S), D(S), E(S) and M(S), as well as a 2G sub-band extension (SE) in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands, including sub-bands for TDD systems.
The auction for the 165 lots on offer is due to take place on December 14.
Anatel said in its statement that new providers of 3G to the Brazilian market will get priority in acquiring Band H, meaning that Nextel and CTBC will be favoured.
Current providers will only be able to bid if Nextel and CTBC do not express their interest. However, these other four providers will be able to bid for the frequencies as extension bands, according to Telegeography citing Valor Online.
Oi and SindiTelebrasil, a union representing Brazilian telephone companies and workers, both appealed against Anatel’s decision in early November. They obtained an order from a Federal Court for Anatel to review its decision to prioritise new operators.
But after carrying out this review, Anatel still decided to reject Oi and SindiTelebrasil’s appeals.
