The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain has decided to delay the auction of 4G licences “pending further notice”.
Reports suggest this decision comes after WiMax operator Menatelecom appealed against being excluded from the sale process, which was expected to be completed in Q1 2013.
The Kingdom of Bahrain is looking to award licences in the 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600MHz bands in order to “foster the availability of high speed mobile broadband, while ensuring healthy competition and investment in the mobile market”, according to the regulator in a November statement.
Although the auction had first been unrestricted, TRA announced last month that only incumbent mobile operators – Batelco, Zain, and Viva – would be allowed to take part in the process.
TRA could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
