Bahrain’s three mobile operators – Batelco, Zain and Viva – have all been awarded 4G licences to use spectrum in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain said in a statement that “a revitalised frequency award process was launched to offer radio frequencies to Batelco, Zain and Viva in order to provide mobile services, including LTE, as a matter of national priority”.
In early April, TRA decided to delay the auction, reportedly after WiMax operator Menatelecom appealed against being excluded from the sale process, which was expected to be completed in Q1 2013.
In its statement yesterday, the regulator said that because LTE “has emerged as the preferred evolutionary path for fixed wireless access technology requirements”, it has decided to provide Menatelecom with “the necessary code for network management, authentication and other personalised services” to help it launch LTE services.
