The prime minister of the Bahamas is in talks with Digicel about the creation of a competitor to BTC, the country’s sole mobile operator.
The Nassau Guardian reported that PM Perry Christie held talks with Digicel about entering the market that is currently dominated by BTC, the company owned by Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) and the government.
BTC’s monopoly over mobile services will expire in 2014.
The recently elected new prime minister has expressed a desire to retake control of the company and is in talks with CWC about the issue. The telco does not want to cede its majority shareholding and has made it clear that it does not want to hold minority stakes in any of its businesses.
