Azerbaijani cellco Azercell is set to receive a 3G licence, Telegeography wrote citing Azerbaijan Business Center. According to the report, Azercell has said that Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev told the country’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to hand over 3G spectrum to the operator.
As such, Azercell CEO Ali Agan believes that 3G services could be ready to go by June 2011.
Azerfon launched local 3G services in 2010 after winning its licence a year ago. But Azercell and Bakcell failed to qualify after submitting incorrect paperwork. They each launched an appeal with the telecoms authority, which could not be reached for comment by press time.
