Malaysian telecoms group Axiata is not in talks to buy Indian BWA licence holder Tikona Digital, TelecomFinance has confirmed.
Indian newspaper Business Standard suggested that Axiata had previously been in discussions to acquire Tikona Digital but recently decided to back out of the deal because the US$1bn price tag was too high and India’s regulatory environment uncertain.
Axiata is already present in India via its minority stake in the country’s fourth-largest mobile operator, Idea Cellular, and was reportedly looking to further expand in the country to provide 4G services in the future.
Separately, it was recently suggested that XL Axiata, the company’s mobile unit, decided to cancel the sale of its towers because of a lack of interest from potential bidders.
