AT&T has said that it now expects to complete the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA in the first half of 2012.
The US$39bn acquisition plan was originally announced in March. At that time, AT&T said that it expected the deal to be closed in approximately twelve months.
But in a regulatory filing on 3 November, AT&T said that it anticipated closing the transaction in the first half of 2012.
Since the original announcement, the deal has faced mounting criticism over its potential effect on competition.
In late August, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to block the deal arguing that it would “substantially lessen competition” for mobile telecoms services in the US. The date for the trial to start has been set for 13 February 2012.
Two mobile operators – C-Spire Wireless and Sprint Nextel – have also filed lawsuits against the deal.
