Leading US operator AT&T is in discussions with US chipmaker Qualcomm over the purchase of a block of 700MHz spectrum, according to reports.
Qualcomm had acquired the spectrum for its mobile TV service Flo TV, a troubled asset which it is now looking to sell, having closed to new subscribers in October.
Qualcomm paid US$683m for rights to use the spectrum in federal auctions held between 2003 and 2008, launching the service in 2004, according to Bloomberg.
Qualcomm has reportedly entered into discussions over the spectrum with several carriers including AT&T, although Verizon and T-Mobile USA have excluded themselves from the process. AT&T needs additional spectrum to increase capacity as it prepares to launch LTE next year.
AT&T was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
