Emerging markets operator Millicom has appointed Arthur Bastings as its executive vice-president for Africa.
Bastings, who takes up the position immediately, will lead the company’s operations in seven African countries, Luxembourg-based Millicom said in a statement.
Bastings was previously CEO of German online games developer Bigpoint. Prior to that, he was managing director of Discovery Communications Europe, which Millicom said he helped to transform into the largest and fastest-growing pay TV channel business in the region. Bastings has also held senior roles at Time Warner and Viacom.
Millicom’s executive vice-president for Africa and South America, Regis Romero, is set to leave the company in early 2014 for personal reasons.
Millicom president and CEO Hans-Holger Albrecht said Bastings’ appointment highlights the company’s commitment to development in Africa.
“We see our growth both in traditional mobile and the convergence play with other sectors of media and internet. I am very excited to benefit from Arthur’s passion and dynamism in building growth assets.”
Listed on NASDAQ OMX Stockholm, Millicom operates in 15 countries. Its other major focus area is Latin America.
