Anatel, the Brazilian telecoms regulator, has announced that it will be holding a public hearing on September 20 on the future of telecoms strategy in the country.
Brazil is Latin America’s biggest telecoms market and has seen fervent corporate and regulatory action this year with the sale of Vivo to Spain’s Telefónica, the investment in Oi by Portugal Telecom, and the rebirth of Telebras as a proposed national champion.
The meeting will discuss the award of concessions between 2011 and 2015, with options on 3G licence in the 1,900-2,100MHz frequency band H high on the agenda. The regulator and government are engaged on a crusade to increase the population’s access to both mobile and fixed line telephony and bring broadband into Brazil’s vast rural areas.
