America Movil’s US MVNO Tracfone Wireless has agreed to buy the majority of smaller operator Start Wireless Group, which operates as Page Plus Cellular.
Also an MVNO, Page Plus operates over Verizon Wireless’ network and has 1.4 million subscribers.
The Mexican giant will add those customers to Tracfone’s 23.2 million, disclosed as of Q1 2013. It is by far and away the largest MVNO in the US and has the fifth most subscribers of any wireless telco in the US.
No financial details of the deal were disclosed and according to an AMX spokesperson the telco did not use financial advisers on the transaction. The Carlos Slim-controlled multinational said that the closing of the deal was subject to certain regulatory approvals and customary conditions. It expects the deal to close within this quarter.
Page Plus offers prepaid plans for voice, messaging and data – the same services as Tracfone.
