Regional telecoms giants America Movil and Telefonica have won contracts in the last week to supply more telecoms services in Peru.
The Peruvian government’s telecoms fund, Fondo de Inversion en Telecomunicaciones (FITEL), revealed to TelecomFinance that on Tuesday it gave two contracts to America Movil to supply mobile and fixed-line services in the North Central and South Central areas of the country.
This includes many important regions within Peru, including the region around the capital Lima.
It will affect over 225,000 people and FITEL will provide funds of over US$35m for the two contracts, although it pointed out that this was significantly less than the maximum amount of funding that had been allocated for the project.
The project should take ten months for installation and a further two months for testing.
FITEL also revealed that Telefonica Moviles had won a contract to provide fixed-line and mobile services in the Selva (rainforest) region of the country.
This project will affect over 110,000 people and FITEL will provide a grant of over US$14m. The project should be ready within 12 months.
The two projects are part of a wider drive by the Peruvian government to provide telecommunications services in rural or remote parts of the country.
